Newsworthy sat down with Sandy Evans and Ellen Kirkwood to talk about everything from their musical childhoods, to their successes to the challenges for women in an evolving jazz industry.

Sandy Evans is a legend of the Australian jazz community. She is an acclaimed saxophonist, composer and educator at UNSW, and has been a key member of the jazz industry since the 1980s. Evans has featured on more than 40 albums throughout her career and was awarded an Order of Australia Medal in 2010 for her contribution to Australian music. She is currently a member of multiple jazz groups, including the Sandy Evans Trio and the Clarion Fracture Zone. Most recently, Evans was awarded Performance of the Year at the Art Music Awards for the performance of Bridge of Dreams, which she composed with Shubha Mudgal and Aneesh Pradhan.

Ellen Kirkwood is a significant jazz artist and has established herself as a leading trumpeter and composer both in Australia and internationally. Kirkwood received the Jann Rutherford Memorial Award for Young Australian Women in Jazz in 2012 and was awarded an Australia Council of the Arts grant in 2016, which she used to write her successful suite "[A]part". She is the director of the Young Women's Jazz Orchestra, is a member of several jazz bands and is currently completing an honours degree at UNSW. Most recently, Kirkwood was commissioned to compose and perform a piece, which she called "Evaporate", for the New York Festival of New Trumpet Music.
